UK stock market trading offers significant potential for investors, it has been observed.

Fidelity International made the suggestion following the release of economic data for the final quarter of 2009, with fund manager Tom Ewing explaining that some companies have performed well despite the recession.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the UK experienced 0.1 per cent growth in the last three months of the year, a level below what had been forecast.

Nonetheless, Mr Ewing noted that firms such as Mothercare and BG Group are set to benefit from a "stronger environment in which to grow".

"We are now in a position where almost every leading indicator is positive and companies we meet are manifestly more optimistic about the next 12 months," he said.

Meanwhile, Ted Scott of F&C has suggested that the weak economy is not particularly relevant to the UK markets, as around two-thirds of earnings tend to be derived from overseas.
