Buffett donates stocks to charitable foundations

Legendary investor Warren Buffett has donated more than 500,000 class B shares of his Berkshire Hathaway holding company to several charitable foundations, it has been reported

The gifts, revealed in paperwork filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, is part of Mr Buffett's plan to give the bulk of his huge wealth to good causes, reports BusinessWeek.

The majority of the shares were given to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which aims to reduce inequalities in the US and around the world.

In 2006, Mr Buffett announced his intention to donate ten million B shares to the Gates Foundation, a further one million to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, which was named after his wife, and 350,000 shares to three foundations run by his children

Berkshire Hathaway owns a number of businesses including insurance, apparel, furniture, jewellery companies, in addition to restaurants and natural gas firms. It also has significant investments in Coca Cola.
